          Responsive Web Design

The challange had been different platforms, different browsers, different rendering engines, and now we add the plethora of differing devices from smart phones, handhelds, tablets, netbooks, etc. to the mix. "Responsive" design is a more mobile friendly interface and consequently different than the older "Fluid" design that we are all familiar. The percent of mobile web traffic is increasing every year, a fact that we can fully embrace in our design scheme.

          Responsive / Adaptive Design

The benefits are obvious: You build a website once, and it works seamlessly across all the different screen resolutions and devices.

In simple terms, a responsive web design uses media queries to figure out what resolution of the device it is being served. Flexible images and fluid grids then correctly size to fit the screen. If you're viewing this article on a desktop browser for example, try making your browser window smaller. The images and content column will shrink, then the sidebar will disappear altogether. On our homepage you'll see the layout shrink from three columns, to two columns, to a singular column of content.

Given the rapid adoption of tablets and smartphones and the fact that users currently seem to prefer reading their news on the mobile web rather than in apps, it's inevitable the trend towards responsive design.

For designers, it offers the simplest way to reach readers across multiple devices, for users it ensures a optimized experience on every screen. That is the goal.
