Collapse of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001, marked a turning point for the web. What followed was Web 2.0; and basically this is the new trend or set of principles and practices that tie together the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, and most notably, collaboration among users. This set of social, architectural, and design patterns resulted in the mass migration of business to the Internet as a platform. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites like wikis, blogs, twitter, etc.

Communications-oriented systems, as in "The Internet-as-Platform," most certainly require interoperability. This web as platform is the new design pattern and business model for the next generation. (This is in contrast to the old single monolithic approach, controlled by a single vendor.) The next wave and design challange is going to be "data portability,"  a concept that is well under way.
